The Ghosts of Pitreavie Castle

No history of an ancient Scottish castle, however brief, is complete without a mention of ghosts: Pitreavie is reputedly haunted by three ghosts, all dating to the time of the battle. The first two, the Lady in Green and the Lady in Grey are said to haunt the castle itself, but most sightings are by Officers' Mess members leaving the Castle late at night, having dined not wisely, but too well. The Lady in Green apparently emigrated to America, where she appeared at least twice in the home of one of the descendants of the Wardlaws. The third ghost is that of a headless Highlander, who roams the plains to the south of the castle in search of his companions, and whose groaning can be heard as he finds them dead or dying.

The most recent manifestation of the supernatural occurred In 1962, when a cleaner felt a hand placed firmly on her left shoulder. ... She was in no way alarmed, for she thought it was the corporal from the guardroom with a message for her ... [She went into a state of panic when she turned round to find no-one there]. The same report repeats anecdotal references to a member of the WAAF being hurled downstairs by a supernatural force, and a later incident in which a telephone operator reported calls being received from an empty room. The Orderly Officer was sent to investigate, unlocked the door to the room and, finding nothing amiss, reported the facts to the telephone supervisor, only to find that the operator had received yet another call while the officer was investigating. Other versions have the call received by the operator while the officer was still in the 'haunted' room!
